Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|address the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the sting of this disaster.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total disaster. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're doomed. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a nightmare of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you stumble upon situations so awful that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer level of destruction and just throws its hands up, opting for a weak, desperate giggle as a coping strategy.
But then, you realize that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain bad. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a sigh.
In the end, you are left with a sense of confusion. You question about the nature of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The earthquake struck without warning, consuming entire villages in its path. Buildings collapsed like house of cards, and the screams that erupted was deafening. Worst Day Ever
It all started with the case of bedhead hair. I couldn't do it to look right. As I was getting ready out the door, I fell and dropped my lunch all over myself. To make matters worse, I was totally late for school.
I flustered. My {boss|mentor|was absolutely furious. I managed to explain, but it was no use.
The rest of the day was just as bad. fell apart. I get anything done.
By the time I reached my destination, I was physically and emotionally wiped out. This day, this horrific day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.
Things Went From Bad to Absolutely Terrible
It all started out terribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then it went from get more info bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
